Plaque text (We will be placing the plaque on the text when we have our Sculpture Dedication on October 21, 2011.):
Historically, the area where Keone‘ula Elementary School now sits was comprised of coral plains and iron-rich dirt. Over time the two materials combined to form a unique and fertile sandy soil. Here we see the kumu (teacher) looking attentively at the bright grains of sand, which flow through her fingers much like the students who pass through this school.
Karen Lucas was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and has made Hawai‘i her home since 1991. She received a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 1998.
The Artists in Residence Program was established by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in collaboration with the Department of Education to provide opportunities for students to work directly with professional artists commissioned to create a site-specific work of art.
