Energy Saving Tips for the Week of October 30, 2011

Energy Saving Tips for the Week of October 30

Energy saving tips for families.

Here are energy saving tips for the Week of October 30:
Home Cooling Tips
  • Set your air conditioning thermostat to the warmest comfortable setting.  Each degree above 75 degrees F saves approximately 3% of the energy used to cool your home.
Water Heating Tips
  • Lower the setting on your water heater to 120 degrees F to 12 degrees F.  Reducing the water heater temperature saves energy by reducing heat loss.
  • Shorten showers.  Cutting just two minutes per shower could save up to 1,533 kWh and $460 per year.
Refrigerator Tips
  • Consider doing without an ice maker and ice dispenser.  Automatic ice makers through-the-door dispensers increase energy use by 14% to 20% and raise the purchase price $75 to $250.
  • Look for a refrigerator with automatic moisture control, which prevents moisture acumulation on the cabinet exterior without the use of a heater.
  • Set refrigerator temperature between 37 degrees F and 40 degrees F in the refrigerator section and 0 degrees in the freezer.
Lighting Tips
  • Choose Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) as they typically use 75% less energy and last up to 10 times longer than standard incandescent light bulbs.  Changing one regular 100-watt bulb to an energy saving CFL, can save 80 kWh and more than $24 per year per bulb, when used 3 hours a day.
  • Consider three-way lamps as they make it easier to keep lighting levels low when brighter light is not necessary.
  • When possible, locate floor, table, and hanging lamps in the corner of a room to reflect more light rather than against a flat wall.
Clothes Washer Tips
  • Use cold water wash whenever possible.  Water heating accounts for 90% of the energy used by your washing machine.
  • Set the correct water level on your washer for the size of the load for optimal efficiency.

Emergency Alert System Test - November 9

As part of their ongoing efforts to keep our country and communities safe during emergencies, the Federal Communications Commission and Federal Emergency Management Agency will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The EAS test plays a key role in ensuring the nation is prepared for all hazards, and that the U.S. public can receive critical and vital information, should it ever be needed.  The first nationwide test will be conducted Wednesday, November 9 at 2 p.m. ET.  This test may last up to three and a half minutes, and will be transmitted via television and radio stations within the U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii, the territories of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Similar to local emergency alert system tests, an audio message will interrupt television and radio programming indicating: “This is a test.” When the test is over, regular programming will resume.  For more information about the nationwide Emergency Alert System test, please visit http://www.fema.gov/medialibrary/media_records/6407 and http://www.fcc.gov/ <http://www.fcc.gov/> .   On November 9 at 2 p.m. EDT, please remember: Don’t stress; it’s only a test.

Energy Saving Tips for the Week of October 17

Energy saving tips for families.

Here are some energy saving tips for the Week of October 17:

Home Cooling Tips
  • Maintain your air conditioner for maximum efficiency by cleaning its filter and vents regularly. Replace filters that look worn.
  • Place lamps or TV sets away from the air conditioning thermostat. A/C thermostats sense surrounding heat from nearby appliances, which can cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
  • Consider room air conditioning units to cool individual rooms instead of one single large unit to cool several rooms.  Individual units can save energy by allowing you to cool only the rooms needed.
Water Heating Tips
  • Take short five-minute showers instead of tub baths.  Filling the bathtub full of water uses over 25 gallons of hot water.
  • Repair leaking faucets.  A drop each second can waste about 1,661 gallons of water a year.  A leaking hot water faucet wastes both water and energy.
  • Install low-flow restrictors in older faucets and showerheads. They will reduce water flow to one to three gallons per minute, thus reducing your hot water costs.
Refrigerator Tips
  • Allow ample sapce on each side of the refrigerator/freezer and around condenser coils for air circulation.  Air flow increases energy performance.
  • Limit how often and how long you open the refrigerator/freezer door.  Plan ahead and remove all ingredients for each meal at one time.  Each time a refrigerator or freezer door is opened, its compressor has to run longer to replace the cold air that spills out.

Energy Saving Tips for the Week of October 11, 2011

We have the following energy tips for the Week of October 11.
  1. Use fans instead of air conditioners, a savings of about $73 per month.  A ceiling fan on for 8 hours per day uses 24 kWh per month or $7.
  2. Plant native plants, trees, shrubs, or trellises around your home to keep your home cooler.
  3. Shorten showers. Cutting just two minutes per shower could save up to 1,533 kWh and $460 per year.

KES Sculpture

Please read the following information about our new KES Sculpture.

Artist: KAREN LUCAS
Title of Artwork:
KEONE‘ULA (RED SAND, VASTNESS)
Media/Year:
Bronze, 2011
Funder:
State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, Art in Public Places, Department of Accounting and General Services, State of Hawai‘i
Plaque text (We will be placing the plaque on the text when we have our Sculpture Dedication on October 21, 2011.):

Historically, the area where Keone‘ula Elementary School now sits was comprised of coral plains and iron-rich dirt. Over time the two materials combined to form a unique and fertile sandy soil. Here we see the
kumu (teacher) looking attentively at the bright grains of sand, which flow through her fingers much like the students who pass through this school.
Karen Lucas was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and has made Hawai
i her home since 1991. She received a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa in 1998.
The Artists in Residence Program was established by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts in collaboration with the Department of Education to provide opportunities for students to work directly with professional artists commissioned to create a site-specific work of art.
